PROFESSIONAL SEAT RESTORATIONS by MORRISON'S CHAIR CANING

Shaker Taping

We can replace the existing shaker tape seat on your antique, or, if the chair is designed for it, put a new shaker tape seat on a chair that previously had a different seat.

Usually the seat will consist of four stretchers, or dowels, that run from leg to leg, around the outer edge of the seat area. This results in a large open area where the seat will be.

The pictures below show a chair frame without the seat and several rolls of shaker tape.

A foam cushion is cut to fill the open area. While the foam cushion is not authentic to the Shaker era, it results in a much more comfortable seat.

The shaker tape is then wrapped around the dowels, from back to front until the front and rear dowels are filled. The same procedure is then done from side-to-side, until your seat is created. These tapes can be either the same or contrasting colors, depending on the "look" you would like to achieve. The three pictures below are to give you an idea of what each pattern might look like.
